This course has already taken place.

On June 23, participants representing a variety of groups affected by cannabis prohibition will gather to hear from those directly impacted by the failures of the current pardoning system, learn about the action taken and the progress made by the Campaign for Cannabis Amnesty, understand the next steps to win amnesty, and commit to taking action.

Over the next two months, a coalition of groups—led by the CEE Centre For Young Black Professionals—is joining with the Institute for Change to learn the fundamentals of community organizing and build a new campaign to win justice for the victims of cannabis prohibition. The goal: a federal commitment to cannabis amnesty.

Cannabis was legalized in Canada in 2018, yet hundreds of thousands of Canadians—disproportionately marginalized and racialized—still have criminal convictions for non-violent, minor cannabis offences. A federal program aimed at expunging past records for cannabis possession has only led to 400 successful pardons as of March 2021. We need a general amnesty for Canadians with convictions for possession of cannabis.

The training will take place over Zoom each Wednesday evening, 7:00pm-9:00pm EDT, for seven weeks starting June 30th. The training series will cover the five key leadership practices: telling stories, building relationships, structuring teams, strategizing, and designing effective tactics. Participants will put the lessons into action immediately and will complete the training with a fully-developed campaign plan.
