About This Event:
Many of us feel the effects of the seasons changing and find it challenging to adjust to colder weather. Mental health is often stigmatized and it can be difficult for people to discuss the ways in which their mental health is affected. In Canada, the winter months can be long and challenging so it is important to find support and resources during this time of year. This presentation will create environment that is open and supportive towards to the experience of mental health.
This presentation will explore the ways in which changing seasons impact mental health and how mindfulness activities can help. Participants will learn about Seasonal Affective Disorder symptoms and causes as well as mindfulness principles and practices. Participants will be invited to participate in interactive activities and mindfulness exercises during the workshop.
About Melanie Matthews
Melanie Matthews is a registered social worker and psychotherapist with BSW and MSW degrees. While completing her undergraduate degree at King's University College at Western University, she completed research regarding access to mental health services for postsecondary students. This research was published in the academic journal Social Work Review and presented in conferences internationally after being awarded Regional Winner in the USA & Canada from the Undergraduate Awards.
Melanie has worked in social services and mental health for nearly 10 years and currently operates a private practice offering individual counselling. Her practice focuses on working with people experiencing distress during life transitions. As well, she works as a consultant for not for profits doing research, evaluation, and grant writing. Her current social justice focus increasing equity and access to resources for Black youth experiencing social isolation.
She has also been an ICL facilitator for over a year where she contributed to the design and implementation of the Black Youth Leadership Program.
Cassandra Chester is Melanie's field placement student. She is a Bachelor of Social Work student at Algoma University.
