Organizing against injustice in an unjust world means we lose – a lot. In those moments, when we're reeling from defeat, how do we keep going? How do we remain a "we" at all?

Please join the Institute for Change Leaders online to explore these questions Sunday 13 July 2025 from 2:00pm – 5:00pm EDT.

In this participatory workshop we will explore how the narratives leaders articulate, down to the specific words they use, can make a difference in these moments. Together we’ll analyze how leaders enable their people to respond to political defeat, using the four elements of the empathetic bridge as our lens:

  • acknowledging loss
  • expressing empathy
  • narrating hope
  • enabling choice

What to expect

Workshop participants will be asked to do some advance reading (up to 30 mins). During the workshop there will be a brief recap of the reading. Most of our time together will be spent collectively analyzing examples of leaders addressing political defeat, and craft ways to strengthen hope and agency in response to loss.

Who this is for

This workshop assumes some familiarity with the public narrative (story of self, us, and now). It is open at no cost to anyone who has already taken a public narrative or community organizing workshop from ICL or another organization using the framework of Marshall Ganz and associates.
