Executive Director of the Institute for Change Leaders

I.    Job Summary: 

The Executive Director (the Director) is responsible for the general management of the Institute’s programs and operations, in coordination with the Founder Olivia Chow and the Advisory Board of Directors (the Board).

The Director will take the lead in budgeting and financial management, oversee fundraising and other revenue generation activities, including the preparation of operating grant applications.

The Director will have the responsibility to effectively raise awareness of the mandate and programs of the Institute with internal and external communities and donors, and establish partnerships and collaboration with key stakeholders for the Institute.

II.    Supervisory

Working under direction of the Board and in collaboration with the Founder, the Director will supervise all staff, interns and students at the Institute.

III.    Major Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Implementation

  • Oversee the development and implementation of long- and short-term strategic plans, goals and objectives for the Institute, in coordination with the Founder and the Advisory Board.

Budgeting and financial management 

  • Lead and oversee fundraising and other revenue generation activities.
  • Provide monthly financial reports to the Chair of the Board and Treasurer of the Board. 
  • Actively seek out new sources of revenue and keep abreast of changes in the funding environment. Identify and develop strategies for securing funding for the Institute. Liaise with potential funders and nurture relationships to enhance opportunities for funding. Oversee funding applications.

Institute Management 

  • Oversee the development and implementation of long- and short-term strategic plans, goals and objectives for the Institute, in coordination with the Founder and Board.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure effective and efficient operation of the Institute. 
  • Ensure best practices in the administration of the Institute’s human resources, financial and other assets.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Institute and its training programs according to objectives, budget, and timelines.
  • Ensure effective planning, development, promotion, and overall coordination of Institute-initiated events and training activities, such as workshops, training series, summits, etc. 

Marketing and Communication

  • Oversee the strategic planning, development, and implementation of marketing activities for the Institute. Plan and direct communication initiatives to raise community awareness about the Institute and its mandate. Develop internal and external communication standards, guidelines, and materials for the Institute.
  • Oversee development of proposals, reports, and correspondence related to potential projects and training programs for the Institute. Ensure the proper negotiations of terms of proposals with funders and other relevant agencies.

 External Relations and Outreach

  • Identify key opportunities for partnerships and support with significant stakeholders, unions, individual donors, and alumni. 
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance the quality of the training programs and expand partnerships with collaborative community-based training initiatives, such as the Leading Change Network.
  • Nurture relationships with the advisory committee and Project Organize (the Institute’s training team.)
  • Develop agendas and support the advisory committee.
  • Oversee the content and management of the Institute’s website.

Human Resource Management

  • Manage the personnel operations of the Institute, including the development and recruitment of staff, trainers, volunteers, and students.
  • Develop performance standards, performance management, identification, and management of staff training needs and coordination of professional development activities. 

IV.    Qualifications

Specific training and experience include:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience at a similar level of responsibility in position(s) that are functionally comparable is required.
  • Extensive fundraising, business development, marketing and/or relationship management experience is required.
  • Minimum post-secondary degree or diploma
  • A proven track record in leadership, communications and motivation in a socially progressive environment is essential.
  • A proven track record of meeting/exceeding sales/fundraising performance metrics is essential.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, competing deadline environment that involves volunteers and multiple stakeholders is also essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of appropriate key political and community and stakeholder networks is important.
  • Extensive experience working with volunteer boards and committees is preferred.

V.    Skills and Knowledge

  • Detailed understanding and professional financial acumen with planned giving instruments
  • Demonstrated passion for major gift fundraising or eagerness to learn and expand skill set
  • Leadership understanding of CRA compliance
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and reporting on key metrics and initiatives for strategic fundraising outcomes across a team and with key internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrated project management, administration and organizational skills
  • Ability to provide motivation and leadership through influence and collegiality (as opposed to direct reporting relationships)
  • Ability to work effectively in teams
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently with little direction or direct supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal and people management skills
  • Ability to appropriately and sensitively navigate across diverse audiences
